The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued new guidelines asking doctors to get a Unique Identification Number (UID) to practise medicine in India. The NMC Ethics Board will issue this UID to doctors, allowing them to register with the NMR and practise medicine in India.

The new notification sent by the NMC stated that there will be a common national medical register for all the registered doctors in the country. The notification noted that the process will be upheld by the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) under the NMC.

This record will consist of all the information of all registered doctors with the Medical Councils of various states, as well as any relevant information on the doctor. The new notification titled Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practise Medicine Regulations, 2023 revealed that the licence of a registered medical practitioner will be for five years only.

Following that, the medical practitioner must renew his or her licence by applying to the State Medical Council. The notification also stated that a licence renewal application can be submitted three months before the validity of the licence expires.
